LAF soldier gets death penalty for spying for Israel

By The Daily Star

BEIRUT: The Military Tribunal handed down the death sentence Friday for a Lebanese Army lieutenant colonel suspected of collaborating with Israel, and sentenced a Lebanese woman to one year in prison on the same charge. Military Investigative Magistrate Riad Abu Ghaida demanded the death penalty for Lieutenant Colonel Ghazwan Chahine for abusing his authority to provide Israel with information about the Lebanese Army during the 2006 July war. He was also suspected of possessing illegal arms and explosives, and confidential military documents. Meanwhile, Ghada Oqayli was sentenced to one year in prison for contacting Israelis and trying to provide them with information about Ron Arad, an Israeli pilot missing since 1986. During questioning, Oqayli said she saw a television ad asking for information about the pilot and offering a reward. She said she did not know she was dealing with Israel and needed the money. – The Daily Star
