Lawyers: Israeli Police Tortured Alleged Hizbullah Spy
Attorneys for Ameer Makhoul, the prominent Israeli-Arab activist who is under arrest on suspicion of spying for Hizbullah, have said they strongly suspected that his interrogators tortured him.
Israel's Haaretz daily reported Friday that attorneys Hassan Jabareen, Orna Kohn and Hussein Abu Hussein were considering legal measures, including a petition to the High Court of Justice, after their request to see Makhoul's prison medical records was denied.
That denial also prompted Physicians for Human Rights to apply for permission to visit Makhoul in jail, the newspaper said.
On Thursday, the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court extended Makhoul's remand for another five days. It also extended the remand of the other suspect in the case, Dr. Omar Sayeed, an Israeli-Arab, until Sunday.
Makhoul was arrested earlier in the month by police and Shin Bet agents in a raid on his home in the northern port city of Haifa. Sayeed was seized in April.
