Now Lebanon - Karam: No one is calling for abolishing STL - September 24, 2010

Free and United Lebanon bloc MP Salim Karam told Future News on Friday that “no one is calling for abolishing the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL),” adding that there should not be a misunderstanding over the issue.

“Some insist to accuse a certain party of assassinating former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri [in 2005],” Karam said.

“We are with PM Saad Hariri’s call to uncover the truth behind his father’s murder, but [accusations] need evidence,” Karam added.

Tension ran high in Lebanon after reports said that the STL will soon issue its indictment. Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in July that the tribunal is an Israeli project that will indict Hezbollah members.

Hariri told An-Nahar newspaper in an interview published on Friday that “there will be no compromises made at the expense of the STL.

Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Franjieh warned on Thursday that if the STL indicts Hezbollah in the Rafik Hariri murder, then war will break out in the country.
