Twenty six thousand Syrians displaced thus far by domestic
violence perpetrated by Assad's army against pro-democratic protesters during
the last 14 months found refuge in Lebanon the United Nations' High Commission
for Relief (UNHCR) disclosed in its monthly report today.
The UNHCR put the number of refugees benefiting from relief at about 16000 in north-eastern Lebanon alone. The Relief Commission also credited local NGOs with tending for nearly half of the Displaced with many of them being registered on waiting lists in order to be taken care of shortly.
About 817 Syrians displaced to the Greater Beirut Area have been accounted for and are being taken care of the UNHCR said. The Commission also accounted for 12 Syrians currently hospitalized for wounds they've sustained through cross-border firing by the Syrian army regulars. The report also mentioned the killing of 2 Lebanese elderly people in the same way.
It brought to attention joint NGO/UNHCR effort aimed at educating children of the displaced be rehabilitating local school buildings for them and by checking on their needs in the field. Among diverse activities undertaken by the UNHCR/NGOs are awareness-raising public health campaigns and rehabilitating abandoned makeshift homes in the area of Ersal; Homes enjoy adequate potable water supplies.
