Kataeb party leader Amin
Gemayel called on the government to find a “serious and quick” answer to the
issue of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, the National News Agency reported on Thursday.
“[I call] on the government
to advance a serious and quick resolution to the Syrian refugees crisis, and
also to provide statistics pertaining to the number of Syrian nationals who
entered Lebanon, either legally or illegally,” Gemayel said following a meeting
with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman.
He added that the
international community should find a solution to the Syrian crisis through the
United Nations “in order for the Syrian people to obtain their rights.”
According to UN estimates,
more than 9,000 people have been killed in violence across Syria since
anti-regime protests broke out in March 2011, while monitors put the number at
more than 11,100, mostly civilians.
An estimated 24,000 Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring Lebanon.

Gemayel also warned that
the next parliamentary elections in Lebanon “might be disrupted,” adding that
the answer resided in “drawing a fair electoral law which would enable a
correct representation.”
Lebanese parties are debating
the electoral law for the upcoming 2013 parliamentary elections after the
parliament agreed on drafting a law based on proportional representation.
