Moukheiber: Proportional representation protects centrists
BEIRUT: Change and Reform bloc MP Ghassan Moukheiber said Saturday an elections law based on proportional representation would protect centrists and said there was no alternative to the present government.
“Proportional representation is the ideal system for protecting centrists,” the Metn MP told Voice of Lebanon radio station in an interview.
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt has rejected outright the Cabinet’s draft electoral law based on proportional representation and warned Friday that such a legislation would eliminate the “centrist voice” in the country.
Moukheiber also praised the government’s policy of dissociating itself from developments in neighboring Syria.
“The dissociation policy has managed to protect Lebanon and all need to be at the same distance from the Syrian opposition and the [Syrian] authority because this is an internal Syrian affair,” he said.
Moukheiber added that Syrian refugees in Lebanon needed to be assisted according to international laws.
The parliamentarian also said the government would remain in power.
“The present government will remain because there is no alternative,” he said.
