Preventing the discovery of the truth behind former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination is “extremely dangerous for Lebanon’s future and stability,” the Future bloc said in a statement issued Tuesday.
Obstructing the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s (STL) work is “unacceptable behavior” and undermines national unity because the tribunal was founded with Lebanese consensus, the bloc said following its weekly meeting chaired by former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora.
The STL is responsible for the investigation, issuing of the final verdicts, identification of false witnesses, and punishing of those who tried to mislead the investigation, the statement said.
Tension is high in Lebanon after unconfirmed reports that the STL will soon issue its indictment for the Rafik Hariri assassination. There are fears that should the court indict Hezbollah members, it could lead to clashes similar to those of the 2008 May Events – when gunmen led by the party took over half of Beirut.
Last week, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah called on all Lebanese to boycott the STL and to end cooperation with its investigators.
