The UK will contribute an additional one million pounds (1.6 million dollars) in funding to the Special Tribunal Lebanon (STL), UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Tuesday.
“This underlines our support for the tribunal [...]It is important that international justice be done,” he said, according to a statement on the Foreign Office’s website.
“I encourage the other members of the international community to do the same, and welcome further contributions by other donor states.”
The statement added that including these new funds, the UK has committed £2.3 million ($3.6 million) in support of the STL over three years.
Tension is high in Lebanon amid unconfirmed reports that the tribunal will soon issue its indictment in its investigation of the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
In a speech last Thursday, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said that Hezbollah will "cut off the hand" of anyone who tries to arrest any of its members in the case.
There are fears that should the court indict Hezbollah members, it could lead to clashes similar to those of the 2008 May events – when gunmen led by the party took over half of Beirut.
