Now Lebanon - Media Against Violence calls for arrest of Al-Akhbar journalist - November 2, 2010

The authorities should arrest Al-Akhbar newspaper journalist Fidaa Itani for “terrorizing the Lebanese,” Media Against Violence said in a statement issued Tuesday.
Al-Akhbar reported Monday that within two hours of an indictment by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) against members of Hezbollah, the party will implement a non-violent scheme to “hold a security and military grip on large areas of Lebanon.”
“It is impermissible for the media to become a means of relaying intimidating talk clearly threatening a resort to violence,” Media Against Violence said, stating that authorities should question Itani to determine his source.
Such incitement violates the constitution, attacks Lebanon’s principle of coexistence, and constitutes a threat to national security, the statement said.
Complacency toward Itani and Al-Akhbar only means “slipping further toward chaos and terrorist climates,” it added.
The statement also condemned retired Lebanese army General Amin Hateit’s comment to As-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper that Hezbollah would settle matters on the ground within 24 hours of an STL indictment’s issue.
Authorities should summon the general for questioning and take the necessary steps, the statement said
