A “well-informed” source close to Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati said the exploitation of Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare’s requests in the domestic struggle aims to mobilize people during the March 14 rally, and drag Mikati into a dispute, As-Safir newspaper reported on Monday.
“Mikati is constitutionally only responsible for forming a cabinet. Any decisions or official [stances] are the care-taking cabinet’s responsibility,” the source added.
A local newspaper reported on Wednesday that four ministers have not complied with information requests from Bellemare who submitted his draft indictment in the case of the 2005 assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri to STL Pre-Trial Judge Daniel Fransen in mid-January.
Mikati was appointed to the premiership in January with the March 8 coalition’s backing following the collapse of Saad Hariri’s unity government due to a long-running dispute over the UN-backed probe.
The March 14 coalition is holding a rally on Sunday “to reaffirm commitment to the principles of the Cedar Revolution.”
