The Daily Star - Khalifeh launches protocols for treatment of cancerous tumors - November 1, 2010

BEIRUT: Health Minister Mohammad Jawad Khalifeh launched the ministry’s protocols for the treatment of cancerous tumors during a news conference held at the weekend.
The conference was held at the Lebanese Order of Physicians’ head office in cooperation with the UN Development Program’s “Token” project for sharing expertise with the diaspora.
It published the protocols which had been drafted by a committee of Lebanese and foreign experts on the treatment of benign tumors. The protocols aim at providing physicians guidance in the treatment of tumors and finding common ground for doctors and the ministry on prescribing medications.
Khalifeh focused on the importance of prevention campaigns in combatting cancer like promoting smoke-free lifestyles, early detection and oral hygiene.
He said 8,000 new cancer cases appeared in Lebanon per year and that 50 percent of cancer patients received their medication free of charge from the ministry. But he expressed regret that many Lebanese did not benefit from medical insurance.
Nizar Bitar, head of the committee charged with placing the protocols, stressed the ministry was looking out for the patients’ best interests. –The Daily Star
