Now Lebanon - Independent Gathering calls on cabinet to affirm international commitments - November 1, 2010

The cabinet should take a firm stance against the attack on Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) investigators and affirm Lebanon’s international commitments, the Independent Gathering said on Monday.
In a statement issued after its weekly meeting, the group voiced worry about reports that Speaker Nabih Berri may call a parliament session to vote on notifying the UN that Lebanon will no longer abide by the agreement that established the STL.
The statement said that parliament does not have such power because any rejection of a UN Security Council resolution violates Lebanon’s constitution.
Two STL investigators were attacked by a group of around 30 women at a Dahiyeh clinic on Wednesday, during which they snatched a briefcase but caused no injuries.
Tension is high in Lebanon after unconfirmed reports that the STL will soon issue its indictment in former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 murder. There are fears that should the court indict Hezbollah members, it could lead to clashes similar to those of the 2008 May Events – when gunmen led by the party took over half of Beirut.
On Thursday, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah called on all Lebanese to boycott the STL and to end cooperation with its investigators.
