Former Lebanese General Security chief Jamil as-Sayyed issued a statement on Wednesday calling on Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar to immediately request that Egyptian authorities hand former Syrian intelligence officer Mohammad Zuhair Siddiq over to the Lebanese judiciary, based on New TV’s report that Siddiq is currently in Egypt.
Sayyed also called on Interior Minister Ziad Baroud investigate Internal Security Forces Information Branch chief Wissam al-Hassan’s sudden visit to Egypt on March 7, the same day New TV said Siddiq was in Egypt.
“The current situation in Egypt does not allow Hassan to claim that he is there on tourism or to hold [meetings] with security authorities.”
Sayyed was arrested in 2005 on suspicion of involvement in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and was released in 2009 due to lack of evidence.
In October 2009, he filed a lawsuit in Damascus against various defendants – including Siddiq – whom he alleges were involved in a conspiracy of false testimonies against him.
