Social Affairs Minister Selim Sayegh said on Tuesday that the calls of March 8 figures to deal with the issue of “false witnesses” are aimed at distracting people from the efforts to uncover the truth behind the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
He told Future News that Lebanon cannot reach a conclusion to the false witnesses’ issue before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) issues its indictment in the Rafik Hariri murder.
“Let us stop giving Lebanon more than it can handle. [The false witnesses’ issue] is made up.”
The “false witnesses” file tops the agenda of the cabinet session set for this Wednesday.
March 8 politicians have called for the cabinet to task the Justice Council with investigating the issue of witnesses who gave unreliable testimonies to the international probe into former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination.
However, March 14 figures have said that the regular judiciary should handle the issue.
