The Daily Star - Workers at State Employees’ Cooperative stage nationwide protest, June 1 2012

BEIRUT: Workers at the State Employees’ Cooperative protested their lack of benefits with simultaneous sit-ins outside company offices in cities across Lebanon.
"We are very sorry to have an open sit-in, but we were forced to do this after several promises made by the authorities to address our demands proved false," said a statement issued by those participating in the sit-ins.
The sit-ins took place in Beirut, Tripoli, Sidon, Zahle, Baalbek, Jezzine and Nabatiyeh.
The protesters called for improved benefits, including those associated with retirement, a demand they said they had previously presented to the Cabinet to no avail.
"Even though decisions to address our demands were made by the director general of SEC and approved by the Civil Service Board, the Cabinet is still not responding properly," said the statement.
The protesters stressed that their demands were modest.
“Despite the fact that our institution was awarded a UN prize for being the best public service institution, we seek no reward. All we need is improved benefits and the ability to enjoy retirement."
The protest disrupted normal work. Employees who came to the cooperative in order to request educational allowances and medical aid forms were not able to obtain them.
