BEIRUT: A massive blaze broke out in the Chouf village of Baawarta late Thursday, forcing residents to flee their homes, which were threatened by the flames.
Several fires also raged in the north and Mount Lebanon prolonging the summer’s series of blazes, while the meteorological department anticipated rain over the coming days.
A fire erupted on the outskirts of Sheikh Mohammad village in Akkar and reached olive and almond fields located near a number of houses.
Civil Defense units intervened to stop the blaze but could not reach the fields due to the severity of the fire. They instead worked on extinguishing locations close to the road, while field owners tried to put out the fire using hoses, shovels and tree branches.
About 1,000 trees were destroyed, including vines, and olive and almond trees.
Several fires also erupted in Kfarmata, Bhamdoun, Ammiq and Bikfaya in Mount Lebanon. The Lebanese Army and Civil Defense units used army helicopters to extinguish the flames, which destroyed about seven acres of forestland.
Another fire erupted in the village of Daqoun in Aley and locals called for the immediate intervention of the army and of Civil Defense members.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department at the Rafik Hariri International Airport predicted rainy and stormy weather for the coming two days, which could possibly eliminate any remaining fire hazards.
It said the weather Friday would be rainy and cloudy, with a significant drop in temperatures and snow falling at 2,800 meters.
Temperatures were predicted to vary between 16 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius on the coast, between 8 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius in the mountains, between 8 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius in the Bekaa, and between 7 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees Celsius in the Cedars. – The Daily Star
