Following his meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said France is not ready to support a Lebanese agreement to cancel the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), Al-Markaziya news agency reported Tuesday.
Kouchner voiced hope that Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s government would not be threatened and added that Berri does not think it is under fire.
“Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit did not contribute to a calm [political atmosphere] because [his statements] in South Lebanon [do not reflect] peace,” the French FM also said, adding that no country can affect the STL’s work and no one knows the indictment’s content.
Berri arrived in Paris on Monday evening for an official state visit to the French capital
The Iranian president arrived in Beirut on October 13 for a two-day visit that took him to Lebanon’s border with Israel. During a rally at Bint Jbeil, Ahmadinejad addressed the crowd, saying, “You proved that there is no power in the world that can defeat [the Lebanese] Resistance,” referring to Hezbollah.
