Now Lebanon - Williams: The STL goes on - October 27, 2010

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) was established under UN Security Council Resolution 1757 and “it exists [and] its work continues,” UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams said on Wednesday after meeting with Lebanon First bloc MP Samir Jisr, according to a statement from his office.
Tension is high in Lebanon amid reports that the STL might soon issue its indictment for former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 murder. There are fears that should the court indict Hezbollah members, it could lead to clashes similar to those of the 2008 May Events.
March 8 coalition politicians are calling for the abolition of the tribunal, arguing that it has been politicized and misled by unreliable testimonies.
Williams added, “the Lebanese need to remember that this is not the only tribunal. There are many tribunals on former Yugoslavia, on Rwanda, on Cambodia and so on and one cannot think that it is only Lebanon that is affected by a tribunal.”
“Of course, so far we don’t know what the actions of the STL will be. There have been no indictments. They did take the decision to release the four generals as soon as the tribunal was able to move on that,” he also said.
