Energy Minister Gebran Bassil—a Change and Reform bloc minister—said on Tuesday that stalling the “false witnesses” issue would lead to an explosion on the political level.
He told New TV that all those covering up the issue of “false witnesses” should bear the responsibility for the political consequences.
“President Michel Sleiman and all political parties [want] to finalize this issue tomorrow. We accept all stances during [Wednesday’s] cabinet session.”
Bassil also said that March 8 will accept the vote’s result even if they lose, adding that March 14 should do so as well.
Ministers are expected to discuss on Wednesday the issue of witnesses who gave unreliable testimonies to the investigation of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination.
March 8 politicians have called for the cabinet to task the Justice Council with investigating the issue of “false witnesses.” However, March 14 figures have said that the regular judiciary should handle the matter.
Tension is high in Lebanon after unconfirmed reports that the STL will soon issue its indictment for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. There are fears that should the court indict Hezbollah members, it could lead to clashes similar to those of the 2008 May Events—when gunmen led by Hezbollah took over half of Beirut.
