President Michel Sleiman said that no solutions have been reached yet regarding the issue of “false witnesses,” which has been a matter of dispute between rival political parties.
In an interview with Ad-Diyar newspaper published on Wednesday, Sleiman said that the ministers will discuss the issue of false witnesses during the cabinet session later in the day.
“The atmosphere [in the cabinet] will be calm and [the situation] will not explode.”
He also said that he is holding ongoing talks with all parties until the cabinet convenes on Wednesday.
“We insist on not putting the issue [of false witnesses] up for a vote.”
The president voiced hope that the parties would be able to reach an agreement.
Ministers are expected to discuss on Wednesday the issue of witnesses who gave unreliable testimonies to the investigation of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination.
March 8 politicians have called for the cabinet to task the Justice Council with investigating the issue of “false witnesses.” However, March 14 figures have said that the regular judiciary should handle the matter.
