Future bloc MP Mustafa Allouch told the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Anbaa in an interview published Tuesday that neither Saudi Arabia nor any other foreign country has information concerning the content of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s (STL) pending indictment or the date of its issue.
Tension is high in Lebanon after reports said that the STL would soon issue its indictment for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. There are fears that should the court indict Hezbollah members, it could lead to clashes similar to those of the 2008 May Events.
Several March 8 coalition politicians are calling for the abolition of the tribunal.
When asked about reports that Saudi Arabia informed Damascus that the indictment will be postponed till next March, Allouch said that “such a false claim only shows how others have been trying to drag Saudi Arabia into conflicts concerning the STL.”
Allouch also added that Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Ottari’s “loathing statements” made on Saturday are proof that the March 14 alliance has a large influence on Lebanese current affairs and changing policies.
The Syrian PM said in an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai published Saturday that the March 14 alliance is a “cardboard box” and that the Syrian regime does not take such labels seriously.
According to Allouch, Syria has been trying to pressure Prime Minister Saad Hariri – via Syria’s allies in Lebanon - to make concessions.
