A cabinet vote on the issue of false witnesses will not solve the problem, which must be addressed politically and calmly, Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt said on Sunday according to the National News Agency (NNA).
March 8 politicians have called for the cabinet to task the Justice Council with investigating the issue of witnesses who gave false testimonies in the international investigation into former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination. Some March 14 figures have said that the issue does not fall within the council’s jurisdiction and that false testimonies cannot be investigated until the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) issues its indictment.
Jumblatt added that justice and stability are inseparable, and that the STL “has no value” if it leads to civil strife.
He also said that the Lebanese Armed Forces needs more funding and something must be done to help the army, asking “are we embarrassed to ask China or Russia for weapons?” and recommending conscription.
