Now Lebanon - Sleiman’s false witnesses solution involves Justice Council, LBCI reports - October 25, 2010

President Michel Sleiman is preparing a resolution for the issue of false witnesses on the basis that it is within the Justice Council’s purview, LBCI television reported on Monday.March 8 politicians have called for the cabinet to task the Justice Council with investigating the issue of witnesses who gave false testimonies to the international investigation into former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s 2005 assassination. March 14 figures have said that the issue does not fall within the council’s jurisdiction and that false testimonies cannot be investigated until the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) issues its indictment. The approach being considered by Sleiman is based on a 2005 decree that assigned the issues of Rafik Hariri assassination and related crimes to the Justice Council, LBCI reported.LBCI added that the president could argue that the issue of false witnesses originates from the assassination, which is already within the purview of the Justice Council.
