Environment Minister Mohammad Mashnouk said on Friday that Prime Minister Tammam Salam's cabinet and the Environment Ministry would not wait until they were urged by the civil society to move, stressing the need to close Naameh landfill on January 17, 2015 and treat it then after until it becomes a public park.
Mashnouk's words came during a meeting with a delegation of the Lebanese Coalition towards Zero Waste headed by Fifi Kallab.
The delegation presented their observations on the plan of building incinerators, saying "it is not the best way to deal with waste in Lebanon".
The delegation suggested composting organic waste, sorting materials which could be used and recycled and re- exporting some of the materials that could not be recycled, such as batteries.
Mashnouk clarified that PM Tammam Salam vowed to put Naameh landfill and the national plan for waste on the top of this government's agenda.
The Minister explained that "the options in the national plan for waste are not final," saying that they are open to any discussion and are honestly searching for a solution.
"We will absolutely have a contingency plan after January 17, 2015 , but our goal is to reduce losses and damages until the comprehensive plan will be carried out," Mashnouk concluded.
