A judicial source told As-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper in an interview published Wednesday that retired Brigadier General Fayez Karam’s request that his trial be televised does not cover for the fact that Karam was accused of collaborating with Israel and he is being tried based on solid evidence.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Karam has the right to discuss and explain the confessions he made during his interrogation.
Karam also has the right to retract his entire confession, but the court has the right to ask questions and study evidence to issue the appropriate verdict, the source added.
“A public trial is the right of everyone… but the court will certainly not respond to some requests that the trial be recorded and broadcast live because such a [move] transforms the judicial court to a media and political [show].”
Military Investigative Judge Riad Abu Ghida issued an indictment last week against Karam, an FPM official arrested by the ISF - Information Branch in August on suspicion of collaborating with Israel.
The judge requested a sentence of temporary hard labor, which could range from three to 15 years.
