Now Lebanon Ad-Diyar: Aoun made his position on STL 'clear' during Connelly meeting, October 25, 2011

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun was “clear” with US Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly regarding his position against Lebanon paying its share of funding to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Ad-Diyar newspaper reported on Tuesday.
According to an unnamed source, Aoun told Connelly that the STL “was unconstitutionally established.”
Aoun met with the US envoy on Monday.

Al-Akhbar newspaper also quoted an unnamed source on Tuesday as saying, “Aoun did not hear anything from Connelly regarding threats against the Lebanese cabinet.”

Connelly expressed on Monday her country’s concern that a failure by Lebanon to meets its obligation to the UN-backed STL could lead to serious consequences.

Four Hezbollah members have been indicted by the STL for the 2005 assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri. However, the Shia group strongly denies the charges and refuses to cooperate with the court.

Hezbollah and other March 8 parties and figures have spoken out against Lebanon’s ties and funding for the tribunal and called it a tool to incite sectarian strife in Lebanon, however, Mikati has repeatedly voiced Lebanon’s commitment to the tribunal.

Lebanon contributes 49 percent of the STL’s annual funding.
