U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly praised on Tuesday the
generosity of the Lebanese and people and government in providing humanitarian
assistance to Syrians fleeing violence, said the U.S. Embassy in a statement.
She stressed “the importance of protecting all refugees in
Lebanon, including dissenters and deserters who have rejected violence, in
keeping with Lebanon’s international humanitarian obligations.”
She made her remarks after holding talks with Minister of Social
Affairs Wael Abou Faour on the political and security situation in Lebanon and
developments in Syria.
Connelly reaffirmed the United States’ continued commitment to
providing assistance to Syrian refugees and the Lebanese communities that are
hosting them, added the embassy statement.
The ambassador renewed the commitment of the United States to a
stable, sovereign and independent Lebanon.
Abou Faour stated that Lebanon is in need of $115 million to aid
Syrian refugees who have poured into the country, reported As Safir newspaper
on Saturday.
He told the newspaper: “Lebanon is unable to support the burden of
assisting the Syrians.”
Up to 30,000 Syrians fled into Lebanon since Thursday, announced
the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on Friday.
Public schools are being prepared to harbor the refugees, who had
been fleeing to Lebanon and other nearby countries to escape the Damascus
regime crackdown against protests that started in March 2011.
