The Daily Star newspaper reported on Wednesday that four ministers have not complied with information requests from Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) Prosecutor-General Daniel Bellemare.
Bellemare sent the requests to outgoing Prime Minister Saad Hariri in February, who relayed them to Public Works Minister Ghazi Aridi, Energy Minister Gebran Bassil, Interior Minister Ziad Baroud, and Telecommunications Minister Charbel Nahhas, the report said.
The report, which quoted anonymous “sources close to the STL,” said that the tribunal has asked for a meeting with Lebanese Ambassador to The Hague Zaidan as-Saghir on March 7 to address the matter.
The report added that “Bellemare is contemplating measures against the ministers who declined to cooperate with his requests, such as listing them by name as uncooperative.”
The daily also said it has obtained copies of Hariri’s letters to the ministers urging them to comply with the requests, which include allowing tribunal investigators to question ministry employees and obtain documents and telecommunications data.
The report also said that Telecommunications Minister Charbel Nahhas told Speaker Nabih Berri on Tuesday that “Bellemare had requested comprehensive information about telephone conversations among the Lebanese, including ministers and lawmakers, and that this violated the public freedom and eavesdropping law.”
