Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar is still waiting for clarifications from Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare regarding ministers’ refusal to comply with the STL’s information requests, LBC TV reported on Thursday evening.
Najjar is waiting to hear from Bellemare whether such refusal constitutes “obstruction of justice” and entails consequences under UN Security Council 1757, or “whether these ministers have the right to deal with these requests according to Lebanese regimes and laws,” the station said.
The station also quoted Telecommunications Minister Charbel Nahhas as saying that Bellemare’s request for telecom data is not a new one and that it still awaits a cabinet decision.
“A delegation of investigators will visit the [Telecom] Ministry next week to discuss the matter,” Nahhas also said.
LBC then quoted an anonymous source close to Interior Minister Ziad Baroud as voicing surprise at reports that Baroud had not responded to the requests.
“Baroud told Bellemare’s investigators that he cannot comply with their request to be supplied with all the fingerprints of the Lebanese people,” the source said.
“An agreement was actually reached between the two sides whereby the investigators chose [to receive] the fingerprints of around one thousand Lebanese.”
