BEIRUT: The European Union has donated 12 million euros to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in Lebanon.
The new program will benefit 3,000 families displaced from the Nahr al-Bared camp after heavy fighting in 2007 between the Lebanese Army and Fatah al-Islam as well as an estimated 736 families residing in the other 11 Palestinian refugee camps across the country.
The funding will help pay cash rental subsidies to families returning to Nahr al-Bared and will help reconstruct shelters in the various camps.
The EU ambassador to Lebanon, Angelina Eichhorst, said “the EU reiterates the need to make further progress in order to improve the Lebanese legislative framework in order to guarantee proper living conditions for the Palestinian population that has been forced to live away from their homeland for more than 60 years.”
Thanking the EU for its latest support, the director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon, Salvatore Lombardo, said: “This is an immensely important contribution.
It will enable us to improve the lives of vulnerable families living in unhealthy or unsafe housing conditions throughout the country.”
