BEIRUT: Thursday’s crime report was topped by the wounding of a woman in Aley in a hand-grenade attack allegedly carried out by her son.
Relatives told The Daily Star that 26-year-old Walid Abdel-Baqi placed a small hand grenade at the entrance of his father’s apartment in the Abu Aram building in the Qobba neighborhood of Shweifat.
Fifty-five-year old Fida Qirdab, Walid’s mother, suffered wounds to her face when the grenade detonated after she opened the apartment’s door.
Sources familiar with the incident attributed it to a family dispute.
The victim was transferred to Kamal Jumblatt hospital and her situation was reported as stable and not alarming, according to a source from the hospital. Internal Security Forces personnel and a forensic team arrived at the scene and began probes.
Walid, who fled to an unknown destination, is being pursued by the police.
In other news, the state-run National News Agency said that an Iraqi woman was mugged in Beirut, while separate criminal acts targeted two houses, a warehouse, and three cars.
In the Beirut neighborhood of Manara, two individuals riding a motorcycle made off with the bag of an Iraqi woman, which she said contained $3000, her personal papers and a mobile telephone.
In the neighborhood of Badaro, thieves broke into the house of Ghada Zakhia when she was absent, and made away with jewelry and cash worth more than $50,000.
According to the NNA, police began an investigation into the incident and dusted for fingerprints to uncover the identities of the perpetrators.
Also, thieves stole jewelry worth of more than $4,000 from the house of Majida Majdalani and electric appliances of the same value from the warehouse of Maroun Hobeika in two separate incidents in the Mount Lebanon town of Adonis.
The police reported three incidents of auto theft, involving a Mercedes, a Hyundai and a Renault, while five other stolen vehicles were recovered by security authorities, the NNA said.
Also, the Internal Security Forces ISF re-enacted the killing of a 49-year old Syrian woman Thursday who was murdered last month at her residence in Jal al-Dib, Metn.
Magistrate Samer Leisha, the Mount Lebanon public prosecutor, and Col. Maroun Nasser of ISF’s Jdeideh unit attended the re-enactment.
A Syrian national, who allegedly committed the crime, and was identified by his initials A.A., was arrested on suspicion of carrying out the murder last week in the north Lebanon town of Batroun.
In separate news, a dispute over the right of way between two individuals in the Beirut neighborhood of Karam al-Zeitoun resulted in a shoot-out shortly before noon. The NNA added that one individual, identified by his last name Yatim, quickly fled the area after opening fire at the other car.
Also, the ISF released the photograph and other information about a Bangladeshi domestic worker who allegedly robbed her employers in Ansar, Nabatieh of jewelry and a sum of around $45,000 last month. –The Daily Star
