Now Lebanon - Najjar: STL cannot be abolished even if parliament majority changes - September 28, 2010

Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar told LBCI television on Tuesday that even if the March 14 alliance is no longer the majority in the parliament, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) cannot be abolished.
“The real problem is political,” he said, adding that the talks about terminating the tribunal are illogical.
“On October 5, the [2005] assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri will be re-enacted in France in a classified way. The press is not allowed to attend the crime re-enaction, and the move will only include some of STL’s defense office members and judges,” Najjar said.
His comment comes as a reference to the test the STL plans to hold in a military base in the French city of Bordeaux to re-enact the February 14, 2005 bombing that killed Rafik Hariri.
“[Since] the crime will be re-enacted, [it means] that the tribunal has a least certain evidence and witnesses [that made it] reach this phase [of the probe],” Najjar said.
Tension ran high in Lebanon after reports said that the STL would soon issue its indictment in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. There are fears that should the court indict Hezbollah members, it could lead to clashes similar to those of the 2008 May Events.
