Now Lebanon - Succariyeh says STL is a weapon in the hands of US - September 26, 2010

In an interview with As-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper published on Sunday, Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Walid Succariyeh said that “the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) is a weapon in the hands of the US to implement its project of a new Middle East.”
“The STL’s [pending] indictment is now pointed against the Resistance to terminate Hezbollah as Iran’s ally and as a Shia party… and here we fear [a possible] Sunni-Shia strife,” Succariyeh said.
“It is true that the Future Movement is a party that represents the moderate Sunnis, but what if [Sunni] fundamentalists such as Salafist factions, Al-Qaeda or others exploited the STL indictment to carry out terrorist attacks [against the Shia]?” Succariyeh asked, saying that “this is what raises our concerns.”

Tension ran high in Lebanon after reports said that the STL would soon issue its indictment in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

There are fears that should the court indict Hezbollah members, this could lead to a Sunni-Shia conflict similar to the one that brought the country to the brink of civil war in May 2008.
