Now Lebanon - Rights group urges Syria to free Kurdish writer - September 19, 2010

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) on Sunday urged Syrian authorities to release Lokman Hussein, a Kurdish writer and politician who was reportedly detained last week.

"Faisal Yusef, a leader of the Kurdish Progressive Democratic Party in Syria, informed the SOHR that Hussein's whereabouts and the reasons for his detention are unknown," a statement from the rights group said.

"Hussein, a resident of Amuda, writes about general Syrian issues for several newspapers and websites. He is well known for supporting human rights and democracy issues in Syria."

The SOHR urged the Syrian authorities to immediately release Hussein, a father of four.

"He should be released immediately and unconditionally. The security services should stop arbitrary detention," it said.
