Now Lebanon - Future bloc questions Hezbollah’s armed presence at airport - September 21, 2010

Following its weekly meeting on Tuesday, the Future bloc issued a statement questioning the presence of Hezbollah’s armed members at Beirut’s Rafik Hariri Airport on Saturday, when a Hezbollah delegation received former General Security chief Jamil as-Sayyed upon his arrival from France.

The statement said that the presence of armed individuals terrorizes the Lebanese and reflects a weak image of Lebanon’s stability. It also condemned the move, stressing the importance of abiding by the law and supporting state security institutions instead.

Attorney General Judge Said Mirza requested to summon Sayyed last week, after the latter said that “[Prime Minister Saad Hariri] should take a lie detector test to prove he did not support or fund false witnesses in the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).” Sayyed vowed to take his right “with his own hands.”

Hezbollah however said that Mirza’s request was “political par excellence,” calling for a reversal of the judiciary's decision to summon Sayyed for questioning.

The Future bloc rejected any attempt to obstruct the STL, probing the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
