Now Lebanon - MTV: Saudi Arabia stresses commitment to STL - September 21, 2010

MTV reported on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia stressed its commitment to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), adding that its position regarding the issue will not change.

Tension is high in Lebanon after reports said that the STL will soon issue its indictment into the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in July that the STL is an “Israeli project” that will indict Hezbollah members.

Contact between Saudi Arabia and Syria began on Monday, MTV said, adding that Riyadh is convinced that the March 8 alliance aims at abolishing the STL.

In an upcoming visit to Damascus, a Saudi envoy will inform Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “that toying Lebanon’s security is forbidden,” the television channel reported.

The report also said that Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt informed Prime Minister Saad Hariri that Nasrallah is keen on fostering calm and is not attempting to stage a coup.
